Value stream mapping (VSM)
A series of steps that must be performed in the proper
sequence to create value for a customer & required to bring a product from
order to delivery
- The entire set of activities running from raw material to finished product for a specific product or product family
- The complete value stream includes information, & product or material flow
- Includes all steps; value-added & non value-added (avoidable & unavoidable)
Whenever there is a
product for a customer, there is a value stream. The Challenge lies in seeing
it
- Helps to visualize more than just the process level
- Allows to see the sources of waste
- Define key leverage points for improvements
- Displays linkage between information & material flow
Purpose of value stream mapping
- Develop a common understanding of the current process
- The relationship of process steps
- A true picture of the process
- Create a baseline to measure improvements against
- Define a vision of the future process
- Establish common leadership objectives
- Identify opportunities for improvement
- Design implementation plan for improvements
Mapping process
Product family
- Gather preparatory information
- Document case for change, define the scope (start & end of process), identify the requirements, and Review/establish measurements
- Set logistics for event
- Participants, Location, Materials, Meals/Refreshments Etc.
Current state mapping
- Observe & gather data
- Walk the value stream (see the actual work place), Follow & make notes about “item” & information flow, Gather data for each step in the flow
- Map the flow of items & information
- Add data & issues
- Use the Handout Data Sheet (pencil & small Post-it notes on 11” x 17” paper)
- Remember “Always start with the Customer”
