Goals, Strategy, Example & Steps to Achieve Lean System

Goals of Lean

  • Improved quality
  • Eliminate waste
  • Reduce time
  • Reduce total cost

Four different notion of Lean have been identified

  1. Lean as a fixed state or goal (being lean)
  2. Lean is a continuous change process (becoming lean)
  3. Lean as a set of tools or methods (doing lean/toolbox lean)
  4. Lean is a philosophy (lean thinking)

Example of Lean thinking

  • A new set of symbols has been created to replace the current numbers 1 – 10.
  • It is imperative that we learn these new symbols as quickly as possible.
  • Our world as we know it, depends on each of us to do our best!

Let’s do it!

Write down as many of the new symbols as you can remember?

Check your answers

  • How many people got all 10 symbols correct?
  • Were you distracted by the countdown on the left?
  • Are there ever distractions when we are trying to learn?
  • Which symbols do most people get right?
  1. 1 – due to repetition
  2. 10 – Its different & it represents the Roman numeral “10”
  3. 5 – Its different
  4. 7 – Its similar to the number 7
  • Most people look for a pattern & have difficulty finding it in a short amount of time
  • We are looking at the pieces rather than the whole
  • This is sometimes referred to as “Silo Thinking”

Now, for linear thinkers…

Does this help?

Let’s think lean!

Steps to Achieve Lean System

Design a simple manufacturing system

  • Decreased cycle time
  • Less inventory
  • Increased productivity
  • Increased capital equipment utilization

Recognize that there is always room for improvement

  • Continuous product & process improvement
  • Elimination of non-value added activities
  • Improved flow of material

Continuously improve the lean manufacturing system

  • Incremental improvement in product, process or services over time
